Youth Spotlight

Maiyira Dominguez – North Miami Senior High, Miami Florida

February 2006 - In addition to being an asset to her YCW program at North Miami Senior High Ms. Dominguez volunteers at the Miami Rescue Mission where she assists the youth with their homework while talking to them and encouraging them to do well in school.

She has also spent some time at the Women’s Center helping mothers take care of their babies and playing with the infants. Maiyira says that she now understands that young women should stay in school and work hard to be self sufficient adults. “I appreciate my mom a lot more because I realize all the hard work she had to do to raise my two sisters and brother.”

In addition, Maiyira understands the literacy issues of her neighborhood and has taken the opportunity to volunteer at the Educational Center with adults who are unable to read.

Youth Crime Watch thanks Ms. Dominguez and her advisor, Kim Ferreira for their dedication. Maiyira was also awarded a Florida Governors award at the 16th National Youth Crime Prevention Conference and International Forum.
